Partner Dina Warner hosted a CLE program on attachment style and client management with renowned Clinical Psychologist Dr. Dana Baerger last month. The session, which was designed for experienced attorneys and mediators, was based on discussions the two have had on tools mental health professionals use regularly that can help divorce lawyers better serve their clients.
Dr. Baerger, a psychotherapist and expert in relational trauma, explained how understanding clients’ attachment styles can help attorneys tailor their approach when representing clients in the context of divorce.
Neuroscientific research in the area of attachment has shown that people develop a method for interacting with others in early life based on how they interacted with their primary caregiver. Once that style is developed, as adults they will use it in many of their interactions even when it might not be appropriate for the situation. Dr. Baerger shared practical tips on how to recognize different attachment styles and respond to them in ways that improve attorney/client communication and productivity.
